Scope and Sequence August During the month of August, students use place value to revisit the value of each digit in a number for comparing and ordering numbers. They will also refresh their addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. September
Students use mathematical solutions and real-world problems to add, subtract, multiply, and divide. They will identify and discover the difference between prime and composite numbers. They will also use letters representing numbers to form equations.
October
Students develop an understanding of personal finance which includes taxes, gross and net income, and balancing a budget. Students compare, order, round, and expand decimals through the thousandths place.
November
Students use multiplication and division to solve equations involving real-world situations using decimals. Students compose, decompose and manipulate fractions using objects and pictorial models. They will also add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions.
December
Students use real-world situations to solve multiplication and division of whole numbers and fractions using pictorial models.
January
Students use objects and pictorial models to develop an understanding of perimeter, area, and volume. They classify figures and shapes based on their characteristics. They will also solve problems by converting measurement within a measurement system.
February
Students discover patterns and determine the rule which exists in a table or graph. They locate and graph points on a plane and develop an understanding of coordinate grids. Students create graphs and tables to organize data.
March
Students use previously taught concepts and skills to understand and problem solve in everyday situations in preparation for the state assessment.
April
Students revisit numbers and operations, algebraic reasoning, geometry and measurement, data analysis and personal finance to deepen their understanding of the use and purpose of mathematics.
May
Students expand their understanding and use of decimals and fractions in everyday situations.
